California Ground Squirrel
This is a very abundant squirrel in California (as the name implies!). In open areas with dirt to dig in, and especially with rocks (or buildings) which can be dug under, this squirrel forms complex underground colonies.
Images 1 - 24 were taken near my home in the Cuyamaca Mountains or elsewhere in the Cuyamaca Mountains, California.
Images 25 - 28 were taken at the Ramona Grasslands in Ramona, California.
The last image is of a very tame and obese squirrel at Morro Rock, Morro Bay, California.

Rock Squirrel
This species closely resembles the California Ground Squirrel, but lacks the pale "mantle" of that species. This female was photographed in Madera Canyon, Arizona.

Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel
This is a squirrel of the interior west, and higher elevations in the mountains. All the images below were taken in Tulare County, in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, California.

Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel
The images below were taken at Kilen Woods State Park, in southern Minnesota.

Round-tailed Ground Squirrel
A desert squirrel, these images were taken at an area with many burrows somewhat clustered together in a sand-dune environment in Borrego Springs, California. This was in spring, when males were in breeding condition, following a wet winter when green vegetation was abundant!

White-tailed Antelope Squirrel
Another desert species, active in the warm months in western U.S. deserts. These images were taken in Anza Borrego Desert State Park, California.
