Western Gray Squirrel
Image 1 is a female that would regularly visit a bird feeding station in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The remaining images were taken near the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite Valley, California. They were photographed in January, and the squirrels were busily digging up acorns that they had cached, and eating them.
Arizona Gray Squirrel
These individuals were photographed in Madera Canyon, Arizona (Image 1), and Patagonia, Arizona
(Images 2-6).
American Red Squirrel
All photographed in Denali National Park, Alaska, except the last squirrel image, which is from Homer, Alaska. The very last image shows a good-sized Red Squirrel midden, along Oxbow Trail. There were quite a few such middens along this trail, many with a single squirrel present "guarding" the midden. The midden is made of many depleted spruce cones, spruce cone scales, spruce needles and an array of holes leading to short food storage tunnels.
