Black-headed Grosbeak
A familiar migrant in the warm months in Southern California. The adult males are a flashy black and orange with splashed of white and yellow. Images 4-7 are a fledgling with its parent in early July. Image 8 shows a fledgling begging, with its wings wiggling and a little bit of a gape still evident at the corner of its mouth. The last image is of a female bird with a manzanita berry. Manzanita is a common and important shrub/tree of the southern California foothills and mountains, and produced many berries after the wet 2023/2024 winter and spring. These images are all from the Cuyamaca Mountains, California.
