Acorn Woodpecker
Very common in oak-containing habitats in San Diego County. These images are all from the Cuyamaca Mountains, California. Image 5 shows a young male bird (with dark eye) drinking sap from a small oak which various Acorn Woodpeckers had drilled holes in. The last image is of a yellow-crowned individual that appeared on and off in my area for several weeks in September and October of 2020.
















Acorn Woodpecker Granaries
Images 1 - 4 are of a building adjacent to the Pine Hills Lodge in Julian, California. These photos were taken in 2024, when the lodge in its original form was closed. A nest hole was attempted as well as holes for the acorns! Images 5 and 6 are of acorns in a granary in an Incense Cedar on Palomar Mountain in California.






Gila Woodpecker

A desert or thorn scrub-dwelling woodpecker. This one was photographed in south Texas.
